Editor's Letter: Glo All The Way Up

It’s August!

I can’t believe how quickly time has gone by. It feels like just yesterday I was saying how this summer was going to change me. Now that it’s coming to a close I can say that I wasn’t completely wrong. I’ll mark this summer as adding to my Glo Up.

Glo Up. verb. The act of transforming for the better in terms of style, personality, and/or confidence.
Nothing says glo up like me being best friends with nikki minaj.

Flashback to when I was a wee babe. I didn't even tell people that I liked to write. I had no confidence in my non-academic work and I was afraid to fail. The only time I was happy with my work was when I posted things online under an alias (I'm not tell you what it is because I still have it and the pieces are... I was 12). But after finally realizing through writing essays outside of school, being Copy Editor of my college paper, and thinking of quality content that I wanted to produce, I began to like my writing and my creativity. Now I have Concept and I couldn't be happier with it.  #proudofmyself #theultimategloup

All of us are turning (or wanting to turn) into the person that we want to be. Few people, if anyone at all, are born exactly how they want to be for the rest of their life. There’s growing pains, mistakes to be made, mental health journeys to be had, people look like you representing well in the media (yas Elaine Welteroth and Ava DuVernay!) to be inspirational. All of these things and more change you into the beautiful human you are right now.

So, when you submit your creative work for August, we want to hear all about your Glo Up! How did you finally start wearing crop tops when everyone was saying they weren’t for your body? What was the turning point when you figured being queer was more fun than not? How did seeing your favorite photographer help you shape your art? Did your hard work pay off and now you love the way your music is coming out? (We wanna hear it!) I want to know the day you stopped letting people mispronounce and misspell your name because it’s more convenient to them. We want your art, your music, your videos, your poetry, and anything you will bless us with.

I hope your August is lit af and Concept: you are valid and we cherish you.
