Freedom to be the Same

“We hold these truths to be self-evident,
that all men are created equal,
that they are endowed by their Creator
with certain unalienable Rights
among these are
And the pursuit of Happiness.”

Americans know this famous line
And we embrace it all the time.
‘Merica: Land of the free
But government dictates where you get to pee.

What makes America so great?
The first amendment allows respectful debate.
Say what’s on your mind,
Then claim your rights, ignore facts, be blind.

Privilege is bountiful
For the “beautiful”
The white. The thin. Those smothered in the Christian religion,
Attempt to disassemble, even just a smidgen,

Include those without a voice,
Women. Cis-gender. Trans-gender. Gender-queer. Labels without a choice.
Include those taught they are different because of their race:
Black. Asian. Latinx. Hispanic. African. Gone from history without a trace.

“When you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression”

Everyone should know these words
Instead of huddling around like herds.
Allow everyone a piece of the pie,
At least be an ally.

America, the beautiful
America, home of the brave
America, land of the free
America, the conservative government

Try to regulate me,
Who I can marry,
what bathroom to use,
hinder my access to birth control and abortion,
protect rapists and murders,

while the man who showed the world the heinous action is locked up to rot.

Black lives matter
Women lives matter
Muslim lives matter
All lives matter
Including an unborn fetus
Even at the expense of the mother.

America the land of the free
Don’t have sex, you’ll get chlamydia and die.

America the land of the free
Make a profit wearing pink
While women are dying
Waiting for a cure.

America the land of the free,
Express yourself however you please,
As long as it aligns with the heteronormative.
Because being gay is a sin
I thought thou shalt love thy neighbor?

America the land of the free,
I’m scared to come out
For what if my job is no longer waiting for me?
I’m scared to come out
Because I’ll be denied housing.
I’m scared to come out
For any second I can lose it all because of who I like.
I’m scared to go out
Because what if there is another Pulse?

America the land of the free,
Stop being so sensitive.
I hate political correctness.
You have a vagina, you’re a woman.
I don’t care you want me to address you as man.
God doesn’t make mistakes.

America the land of the free,
Do as you please
As long as it doesn’t go against my views

America the land of the free
I will regulate the shit out of you
To silence your voices
To murder you
To whip into shape
So you never stray from the status quo.

America the land of the free,
I’m trying but you won’t let me.
